James Howarth per “Indefatigable” arr 1815 (aged 35 in 1814) Recorded at his trial and on ship’s indent as “HAWORTH” but thereafter in NSW as “Howarth” From ship’s indent written in 1814 (very difficult to read) A waggoner Aged 35, Native of Lancashire. Convicted at Lancaster Assizes 5 March 1814 Hazel eyes, dark brown hair, sallow complexion, 5ft 7inches Ticket of Leave 12275 From England Criminal Registers, 1814, Lancaster: found guilty of “horse stealing” 15 March 1814 and given the death sentence. Obviously commuted - LIFE transportation. (England Criminal Registers -Lancaser, 1814) 1817 Muster - “government labour” 1821 Muster - “goverment Employ” By Sept 1822 he had a TL and was a coach maker in Parramatta and also leased a small plot of land at Parramatta, with 1 horse and 3 hogs. 1823 muster - Coachmaker, Parramatta 1825 MARRIAGE NSWBDM 416/1825 V1825416 8 On 15 September 1825 James (signed his name) married Sarah Jane BRIDGE in Sydney at St Phillips. Sarah Jane Bridge had arrived on “Mary Ann” in May 1822. * English, Protestant, From “Mary Ann” Indent: * aged 22 (meaning she would be 28 in 1828, not the stated 26) and a cotton weaver * Native of Lancashire * 5ft 2inches, fair skin, hazel eyes and brown hair. From England Criminal Registers, 1821, Lancaster: * Convicted at Lancaster in the Lent Assizes 1821 of receiving counterfeit bank notes. * Sentence 14 years transportation. * Her father Charles Bridge had been convicted at Lancaster Assizes in March 1819 for having counterfeit notes, and given the death sentence. Commuted to Life, he had arrived the “Prince Regent in January 1820 and was living at Parramatta in 1820 with a NSW-acquired wife. ?* Sarah Jane was sent to the Female Factory on arrival. She gave birth a year after arrival, in 1823 to a son called Edward HIGGS. No birth registration. Taken from existence of 5 year old Edward in the 1828 Census. * Sarah Jane had got consent on 1 August 1823 to marry 50 year old Matthew Finnegan, Irish per “Providence” in 1811, but Finnegan died in 1823. They may not have married before his death; she probably agreed to marry him to secure a future with the baby. * By 1824 Sarah Jane had been assigned to William Grose, shoemaker, and was charged with “drunkenness in her service” and returned to the Factory. Enter James Howarth for 1825 Marriage.. 1828 Census: * The Howarths, lived on the Sydney Road in the Concord return district, and had 2 workers, one Came Free and one was FbyS, both Labourers. * Both Protestant, James "aged 41" "JANE" "aged 26"* * Edward Higgs, son of “JANE” Howarth, was aged 5 years.
