On the evening of Tuesday last, about eight o'clock, five prisoners effected their escape from Carrickfergus jail. It appears, that having been permitted, from their previous orderly behaviour, to walk about in the jail, they on the present occasion had concerted with some of the other prisoners to create a riot in another part of the jail, which drew the attention of the jailors to that part. In their absence, the door was opened by skeleton keys, which had been previously procured, and the five persons walked out without occasioning any noise or observation. Another was just going out, when a servant girl noticed him and gave the alarm. He was stopped, but the others escaped. Certainly no blame can attach to the Jailor, who was ... off to attend to the riotous conduct of the prisoners in the other part of the jail. ANTRIM, on the 29th day of APRIL instant, at EIGHT o Clock in the Evening, by means of a false or skeleton Key: … WILLIAM HAWTHORNE, under rule of transportation—He is about feet two inches high, stout made, remarkably inn-kneed, fresh complexion, brown eyed, short nose, round visage, dark brown hair, about 26 years of age—had on when he escaped, a short blue jacket, a brown great coat, corduroy pantaloons shoes and hat—was bred near Lurgan, and by trade Flax-dresser. : Belfast News-Letter, 2 May 1817.
