POLICE INTELLIGENCE. FORGERY. Head-Office. A woman attempted to utter a forged note, in Mr. Barry’s New Tea Warehouse, Parliament-street, and was arrested by Peace-officers Green and Hartley; she underwent an examination on Sunday, was remanded, and yesterday brought up again. John Downey, Clerk in Mr. Barry’s Establishment, appeared against her; he stated, that the prisoner, who calls herself Mrs. Callaghan, asked for a half pound of tea, and tendered a note, purporting be a one pound note of the Belfast banking-house of Gordon, Batt, Houston and Batt, No. 3G92—date, June, 1822; the signature and mark of entry were both in copper plate, and were were generally admirably executed. —The prisoner’s real name proves to be Rose Haydon; she was recognised at the Office immediately, as the wife of R. Haydon, now in Newgate, under sentence of transportation for seven years. She pleaded that she that she did not know the note to be forged; she had been tried at the last assizes for Dundalk, on the same charge, and acquitted. She frankly admitted her anxiety to be transported with her husband, and was committed to Newgate for trial at the next Commission. Saunder’s News-Letter, 26 Nov 1822.
