HO-9-4 3 page 38/52. Justitia Hulk, Woolwich. Received 16 th May 1822. Edward Haynes, age 17, Highway Robbery, tried at Gloucester Assizes 3 April 1822, NSW Life, Transpd. 12 June 1822.
On the 15th inst. Edw. Haynes, Henry Baker, Francis Jefferies, Joseph Holder, Joseph Surrage, John Wilmer, Benjamin Barlow, and John Stone, capitally convicted the late Gloucester Assizes, but afterwards reprieved, were removed from the County Gaol to the Hulks at Woolwich preparatory to their being transported for life to New South Wales. Bristol Mirror, 1 June 1822.
Edward HAYNES was convicted at Gloucester, England on 22 April 1822 for Highway Robbery. Had been convicted for stealing twice before. Confessed to this offence. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Caledonia'. Conduct onboard ship given as "orderly". Father & Mother stated to be living at Bristol, England. VDL: Assigned to work service. 6 Jan 1827: at home of Mr & Mrs Lascelles - disobedience of orders. Reprimanded. 31 July 1832: Application for permission to marry - Eliza CHANDLER (per ‘America’) to Edward HAYNES (per ‘Caledonia’). Approved. (ref. 45/1/1) 24 Sept 1832: Marriage - Eliza CHANDLER, spinster to Edward HAYNES, bachelor at New Norfolk, VDL. (ref. 36/1/2 no. 1991) 26 Sept 1835: Conditional Pardon, no. 733, approved. 30 July 1840: Free Certificate issued, no. 600.
