John was a glass cutter working as a tradesman in St Paul's Yard, next to the cathedral in London. Over an extended period John would smuggle glass drops (specially cut to be part of chandeliers) to a skilled accomplice who lived nearby, presumably with the aim to create a chandelier together to sell. The teenage daughter of John's accomplice - after having a row with her father about meeting a boy - informed the authorities of what they had been doing. John's accomplice hanged himself, John went before the old bailey and was sentenced to seven years transportation. Aged 34 when he was convicted, he left behind a wife and three daughters, never to see them again. On arrival in NSW he was assigned to Rev Samuel Marsden at Parramatta. By age 41 in 1820 he had started a new family with 18 year old Faith Cooper, the daughter of a member of the NSW Corp. They married in 1821 however John died suddenly in 1822. They had a son and daughter (John Robert and Jane); after John's death Faith admitted the children to the orphanage in Parramatta as she was unable to support them. The story ends well as by 1823 Faith had met and married ex convict John Matthews and went on to become one of the early settlers in Gouldburn with a big family including John Hearne's children.
