Joseph Hedger was born on 24 December 1804 and christened on 3 February 1805 at Bedlington, Northumberland, England. His father was Thomas Hedger and his mother was Ann Winder. In May 1833, Joseph Hedger obtained his Ticket of Leave in the County of Camden, New South Wales. He married Maria Flaherty at Bathurst, N.S.W. on 24 December 1834 (his birthday). They had a daughter, Sarah Hedger, born at Bathurst on 19 May 1837 and christened on 26 December 1837.
