Irish Convict Database by Peter Mayberry. Roger Heffernan, age 65, Mangles (2) 1822, Tried at Cork Co., 1822, Life/ DOB 1757, Native of Cork Co. Shopkeeper. Died 1834 at Sydney. --------------------------------------------------- Roger Heffernan was tried at the Cork Special Commission in 1822, which dealt with a numbe rof cases invoving "Whiteboy" rebels. He was convicted for selling gunpowder and ammunition to the rebels. It turned out that be had sold it to person employed by the Magistrates, whose suspicions bad been directed towards Heffernan, and whose agent described himself be the interest of the 'White Boys; on which the prisoner sold him, with much alacrity, a considerable quantity of powder, and threw into the bargain much shrewd advice upon the measures best calculated to promote the insurgent cause. The man was found guilty, but the law of the case was reserved for the consideration of the twelve Judges on the point. (from The Limerick Chronicle) Windsor and Eton Express, 2 Mar 1822. Roger Heffernan, Convicted at the Commission at Cork, for selling powder to the Whiteboys. The twelve Judges sat yesterday in consultation upon this individual.
