Jan 1817 - Joseph was a porter for the stationers Nowill and Burch in Jewry Street, Aldgate, London 19 Feb 1817 - Trial in London. Aged 21. No set punishment due to illness. Judgement respited till next Old Bailey Sessions. 13 Dec 1817 - Trial in London. At the Old Bailey Sessions he received a death sentence for stealing upwards of 40s. from a dwelling house. 10 Feb 1818 - HIs sentence was changed to transportation for life. Proceedings of the Old Bailey. https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/images.jsp?doc=181702190008 12 Aug 1818 - Woolwich, Kent. Received as a prisoner on board the hulk ‘Justitia’. Aged 23. (Home Office: Convict Prison Hulks: Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849. Microfilm, HO9, 5 rolls. The National Archives, Kew, England.) 25 Aug 1818 - "Lord Sidmouth". Notes from Surgeon's Journal: The convicts began arriving from the Justitia hulk on 25th and the surgeon was careful to search them and remove knives and razors etc. He allowed them to form their own messes. 27 Sep 1818 - The barque "Lord Sidmouth" departed Sheerness, Kent. 11 Mar 1819 - Arrived Sydney Cove. Description: fair ruddy complexion, 5' 1 3/4" tall, brown hair, hazel eyes, aged 22. 1825 - County of Evan NSW. Joseph is assigned as a Government Servant to Jane Hall. (Its possible, but unproven, that this was Jane Aull, grandmother of his daughter's husband.) 1830 - County of Evan. Ticket of leave #30/944. This was cancelled on 20 Nov 1837 when he received his Conditional Pardon. 17 Jan 1839 - Christ Church, Castlereagh, NSW. He married the widow Clara Pearce -nee Palmer. They applied to marry on 20th Jun 1838 which was approved on the 27 Jun 1838. He was working for Alexander Fraser. Clara brought 8 children and property with her to the marriage. Joseph and Clara had one daughter - Athelia Hempsted (1840-1934) who married Robert Kirk in 1857. 19 Sep 1861 - Agnes Banks (Yarramundi, Yellow Monday Lagoon), NSW. Joseph died of old age. His daughter Athelia, completed his death certificate and named his parents as James Hempsted - farmer and Mary Barnett. He was buried at St Peter's Church of England 3 days later.
