Convict Notes
DRAY ROBBERY.-Yesterday a man named Luxfield was brought before the bench charged with stealing some orders and a bundle of bags from a man named Henry Shoulders, who, with himself, had brought a dray down from Muswellbrook. It appeared the orders, a £1 note, and a letter for Mr. Portus, were taken by Luxfield from the trowsers pocket of his companion while he was asleep, they being at the time encamped on the road between East Maitland and Morpeth. He then persuaded Shoulders to go to Mr. Portus and say they had been attacked by bushrangers and robbed, which Shoulders did, and while he was away on this errand Luxfield stole the bags also. Shoulders having told his tale rather clumsily was taken into custody, and to save himself told the truth. The stolen orders were found upon Luxfield when taken into custody. He was remanded. Henry was born anywhere from 1786 to 1800. Records from the National Archives list Henry as aged 44, a 'Huckster' (a person who sells small items door-to-door or from a stall), and from Chiddingly. The birthdate of 1786 actually corresponds to his death date (see below). Henry was married with 1 male and 4 female children. 27/12/1832: Assigned to E Cory? at Hunter River. 1837: Aged 39? Assigned to Charles Buchanan. 1841: TOL 12/5/1848: TOL Passport, Muswellbrook Bench. 1865: Henry died at Muswellbrook, age listed as 79, which corresponds to the earlier birthdate.
