In July 1836, James Herkes and John Wilson were convicted at the High Court of Justiciary of 'breaking into the house of the Honourable Henry Cockburn at Charlotte Square and stealing three coats and tartan mantle. Both having previous convictions for theft, received transportation for 7 years - see Scotland newspaper 13 July 1836, p 3 on 'High Court of Justiciary'.
