BRUTAL ASSAULT AN ATTEMPT AT MURDER.—Thomas Langford, 21, Edward Viccars, 25, Ambrose Hetherington, 29, and Henry Driver, 33, were indicted for assaulting, with intent to murder, Thomas Williams, at Strood, in the city and borough of Rochester.—Thomas Williams, who came into the witness-box on crutches, was accommodated with a chair. He deposed that he was a porter on the Rochester and Gravesend Railway ; on Whit Monday he and a person named Howard left their employ at one o'clock in the morning, and went to the Dolphin public-house, where he saw the prisoners and several other persons, in a room upstairs, drinking. While he was there Langford made a bet with a man named Paget, to dance with Viccars, which was decided in favor of Paget ; there was a little dispute with Viccars and Paget, which ended in the room ; he departed shortly after, leaving some of the prisoners in the house. When he had left the house, Viccars, using some violent language, said he had been waiting for him an hour, and knocked him down ; Driver was standing close to him ; Hetherington struck him with a bludgeon, and again knocked him down, and, while on the ground, Driver kicked him several times ; was insensible a considerable period, and when he recovered found himself in the Dolphin.—John Tuff, superintendent of the Rochester police, deposed that he brought the prisoners to gaol. and, when getting into the van, Hetherington said, -- the man, I hope he will die ; and Langford said to the persons who were standing by, that it was an honor to to them.—Guilty.—Langford, one year hard labor ; Viccars, transported fifteen years; Hetherington and Driver, transported twenty years. Dover Telegraph, 2 Aug 1845. The undermentioned male convicts were on Saturday morning removed from the county gaol, to the Millbank prison: Henry Driver, Ambrose Herrington, and Charles Leach, transported for twenty years; James Austin, William Lee, Thomas Taylor, John Cross, Edward Viccars, Michael McMahon, James Simmons, and Charles Davis, for fifteen years; Edwin Brotherton, James Exton, Robert Spears, and Edward Spicer, for ten years; Fred, George Janes and Henry Flood, for seven years.
