VAN DIEMAN'S LAND. Murders. A dreadful murder was committed at Macquarie Harbour in January Inst the unfortunate victim, John Honly, having been stabbed in three places in his body, and his throat cut from ear to ear. It appears that he was murdered for the sake of pound of bread. The murderers, Samuel Higgins and George Driver, had been subsequently tried in Hobart Town, found guilty, and executed on the 30 of January. Mayo Constitution, 4 Sep 1828.

1825 - Conduct Record. CON-1-19. Indent No; 689. Trial; 29 Mar 1825. Transported for "Felony" [House Breaking] Status; Single 1826 - 6 June. Stealing a pint of wind on 5 Feb. Sentence; Transported to such place as the Govt. may direct. 1827 - 6 Jan. Stealing on board the Brig Cypress, the property of Capt. Kingshome. Sentence; 50 Lashes 1827 - 11 Sept. Violently assaulting & dangerously stabbing a fellow prisoner with a knife. Sentence; 75 lashes & 6 months in irons 1827 - 5 Oct. Altering his Irons so the he could slip them off at pleasure. Sentence; 50 Lashes 1828 - 27 Jan. Sentenced to death 1828 - 30 Jan. Executed

A dreadful murder was committed at Macquarie Harbour in January last, the unfortunate victim, John Hoaly, having been stabbed in three places in his body, and his throat cut from ear to ear. It appears that he was murdered for the sake of a pound of bread. The murderers, Samuel Higgins and George Driver, have been subsequently tried in Hobart Town, found guilty, and executed January 30.
