Thomas Stephen Higgins was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 14th Jul 1816 and arriving 20th Dec 1816 with 150 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

He was tried for being idle & disorderly at Limerick county Ireland, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW on 20 12 1816 after a voyage of 5months on SURREY; he was Catholic; he is recorded from December 1816 to 1823 as working for Sir John (Jamison). He married as emancipist Sophia (Field) on 7 6 1824 at Castlereagh & produced 5children. He was Free by Servitude by 1825. In 1828 he was recorded as farming on 70acres at Evan. Thomas married Sophia Field, 7 June 1824 at Castlereagh. Sophia was the daughter of Edward Field (NSW Corps, Scarborough, 1790) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Convict, Mary Ann, 1791). Thomas and Sophia had 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons up to 1833.




Thomas Higgins, aged 25 was convicted in County Limerick, Ireland of being 'Idle and Disorderly' and sentenced to 7 years transportation.
