Convict Notes




Tried and convicted at Lancaster Castle on 21st March 1818 for burglary, sentenced to 7 years transportation, on 18th May 1818 he was received on board th Prison Hulk 'Lance', which was moored at Portsmouth. Left Portsmouth England on 19th July 1818. Ship:- the 'General Stewart' sailed with 250 male convicts on board of which 4 died during the voyage. Arrived on 31st December 1818. On 7th June 1823 he was servant of William Whiteman of Evan, who attestation as to his character for a ticket of leave He Received his Certificate of Freedom on 24th March 1825. George married Sarah Moore (nee Hopkins, daughter of convicts John Hopkins, 'Matilda' 1797 & Hannah Birmingham, 'Marquis Cornwallis' 1796) on 17th August 1842 at Jerrabombera, Queanbeyan NSW, they had 7 children between 1838-1851. Sarah died in 1859 age 60. George died in 1862 at Cooma NSW age 63.
