Convict Notes

Possible death?? Inquest.— On Saturday last, the coroner assembled a jury at the house of Mr. Reeves, publican, West Maitland; on view of the body of a man named Christopher Hill, who was drowned in a lagoon on the Hunter. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased, alarmed on hearing that his daughter had endangered her life by bathing, rushed into the lagoon in question with the intention (as is supposed) of saving her life, although the woman had been rescued previous to his arrival. The lagoon contained very deep water, and before any effectual assistance could be rendered to the unfortunate man it was found that life had become extinct. The jury returned a verdict of death from drowning, the deceased being at the time in a state of intoxication. Hunter River Gazette, 9 Apr 1842.
