Hill was the Captain of the ship Challenge which sailed for Liverpool from West Africa in May 1845. After one of the crew fell asleep whilst on watch, Hill flogged him with a rope and then a paddle, leading to his death about 8 hours later. Hill was charged with murder but the jury returned a verdict of manslaughter. (Liverpool Mercury 29th August 1845)
