There is no “dd” against this man's name — it was the Thomas HILL who was tried in Somerset who died during the voyage. “At the adjourned Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the county of Surrey, held at the Town-Hall at St. Margaret's Hill, … Thomas Hill, for stealing lead, was sentenced for transportation for seven years.” (Reading Mercury, 2 March 1789) The Gorgon arrived in Sydney on 21 Sep 1791 and by 4 Nov 1791 Thomas HILL had arrived at Norfolk Island on the ship Atlantic. He left on 19 Feb 1796 on the ship Reliance, because his sentence had expired. It was exactly 7 years and one day since his conviction on 18 Feb 1789. This was the man who had a long-term relationship with Elizabeth THOMAS on Norfolk Island. Elizabeth later married James WATERSON.
