Charles Hillman was convicted at Umballa/Ambala, district of Delhi, India for insubordination and striking a superior officer, Sgt. Allen of the 61st Regiment. Life transportation sentence. Transported from Calcutta to Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Gazelle', arriving 07/04/1848. Aged 23yrs; soldier/labourer; Protestant; can read & write; fresh complexion; grey eyes; brown hair; single man; 5'9"; native place of birth - Somerset, England. 3yrs in the 61st Regiment. 10mths 81st. 2 yrs Probation at Cascades (south Hobart) 1848: a Watchman at Cascades 1849: a Police Constable, Hobart Several records of misconduct and being dismissed from Police. Served time of hard labour and in chains. 171 days gained by task work.
