I have viewed the microfilm records of the Florintina for her second voyage to Australia and I saw that Jonas was signed on as Joseph and signed off as Jonas.

Bedervale was not a bed and breakfast when it was built by Cogill in the 1840's. Cogill had some 70 convicts assigned to him and he was one of two people (the other being Dr Wilson after whom Braidwood is named ) who developed the Braidwood area. Jonas was my wife's ancestor and the family still has strong links to the Araluen area where Jonas's family settled.

Jonas married Sarah Lamb at Goulburn 30 June 1840. They were both working at "The Sandhills" at the time. Sarah was houseservant to Jeremiah Linde Jones. Sarah emigrated from London shortly before marriage. Jonas was convicted again for sheep stealing in 1850, received 5 years hard labour on the roads, but this was overturned due to his bad health - rheumatism. I believe that he assisted to build "Bedervale" B & B for John Coghill - still stands today.

This is actually JONAS Hinchcliffe, not Joseph. He is my gggrandfather. He had his name spelled in various ways. He was born in Yorkshire c1804 and died in Braidwood NSW in 1859. He had four children.
