Yes, William was assigned to John Bisdee, in VDL. Bisdee came to Tasmania in 1821, with his wife, and was granted land at Bothwell and later at Jericho, Tas. He was highly regarded and held various positions for the government. His brother Edward also came out and managed the properties. He was also known as a tree propagator. Bisdee was known as a just and humane man who had many convicts assigned to him (and was instrumental in convincing the govt to use this system rather than prison).
William Hobbins was listed as 19 years old (born 1809) on arrival in VDL. William’s native place was Coventry, his father was a watch work maker. Sick List of the Georgiana 1828: Folio 5: William Hobbins, aged 22, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pyrexia with scalded scrotum; put into list 18 January 1829, discharged 14 February 1829 cured. (which makes him born 1806) William was 5’7 ¼” tall, Single, Ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, Woman & Bust of a Man on rt. Arm W.H. above Elbow joint same Arm little finger left hand crippled point mid finger rt. hand deformed. 31/12/1835: COF William most definitely did not stay in Tasmania, there was a departure on 26/3/1836 – Launceston to Melbourne per ‘Enterprize’ – also on 10/8/1836 William Habbins (although listed as Hobbins in the Shipping Arrivals) in the Australian 26/8/1836. 18/7/1857 The Argus, Melbourne: Sambourne, Warwickshire, - Williams Hobbins may hear of his brother. Appears on Musters throughout sentence assigned to a John Bisdee (sp not 100% sure on surname) under the number 921. 1935 Muster lists him as "Free by servitude 14 July". On which date he was 21. No returning records yet, but married in Warwickshire to first wife 17 Oct 1843.
