Samuel Hogg was sentenced to be transported for seven years, but after having been sent to the hulks at Portsmouth, he escaped and returned to Lancashire. He was again caught, and sentenced to death, but later reprieved, and was transported for life. Newspaper reports and hulk records give the details of his convictions. Samuel Hogg and James Hargreaves, for stealing 15 pieces of calico out of a waggon, to be transported for seven years. York Herald, 14 April 1804. On Monday last, William Greenwood, John Banks, Thomas Robert Mayers, Samuel Hogg, James Forsyth, Joseph Bather, William Cowburne, John Evans, James M'Quire, and John Cunliff, convicts under sentence of transportation, were removed from our Castle, in order to be put on board the Hulks at Portsmouth Lancaster Gazette, 16 June 1804. Hulk Records at Portsmouth. HO-9-8_3. Received 2 prisoners from Lancaster, 14 June 1804. Thomas Robert Mears, age 37, G.L. Tried at Lancaster Castle 29 Mar 1804, 7 years. Sent on board the ship Fortune, June 1806 Samuel Hogg, age 31, G.L. Tried at Lancaster Castle 29 Mar 1804, 7 years. Escaped 5 January 1805. On Thursday sen’night, Samuel Hogg, who was transported, March assizes, 1804, and James Booth, who had formerly been transported, were apprehended, through the vigilant exertions of Mr. Nadin, deputy constable, of Manchester, for robbing the shop of Mrs. Matthews, near the Crescent, Salford, of a large quantity of silk handkerchiefs, lace, and ribbons; also Alice Parkinson, for receiving part of the said goods, knowing them to be stolen. On Saturday they were examined at the New Bailey, when they were all committed for trial at the next sessions.— The above goods were found in their possession, as well as a large quantity of other articles, which there is every reason to suspect have been stolen. Lancaster Gazette, 6 July 1805. On Wednesday the Sessions commenced the New Bayley Court House, Salford, when Samuel Hogg and James Booth for stealing silk lace ribbons, &c. from Mrs. Matthews, Salford, were sentenced to be transported for seven years. Manchester Mercury, 30 July 1805. At the Lancaster Assizes, Samuel Hogg, for returning from transportation before the expiration of his time, and John Birkett, who was found guilty, at the late Assizes, of forgery, but judgment respited, received sentence of death. Westminster Journal, 7 Sep 1805. A reprieve has been received for Samuel Hogg, who was condemned at Lancaster Assizes, for returning from transportation. Carlisle Journal, 21 Sep 1805.
