20/3/1852 Reading Mercury Berkshire, England: WOOLHAMPTON.- The numerous burglaries committed in this neighbourhood about nine months since, especially the one at the Earl of Falmouth's, Woolhampton House, and the capture of the notorious George Holdway for the same, will doubtless remembered by our readers: Holdway was committed at the same time on the charge of housebreaking in Hampshire, and at the recent assized held at Winchester he underwent an examination on that charge : Mr. Reynolds, constable of Brimpton, and various others from Woolhampton, attended that trial : no less than five indictments were preferred against him, to all of which he pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to transportation for 21 years. The public are much indebted to the unceasing exertions of Mr. Reynolds, in bringing to justice a person who has been so many years the terror of the neighbourhood. George Holdway was born in Ashmanworth, Hampshire, Eng. The son of John Holdway and Jane (Grace) Holdway. 1847: Married Ann Willis - no children. George was 42 years old on arrival in WA, 5'6" tall, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, fresh complexion, literate, pockpitted, lost two upper teeth, scar on left cheek. Occupation: Listed as a 'Woodman'. 27/8/1859: TOL 29/12/1862: CP 20/11/1866: Married Katherine Susannah Murphy, they had 2 children, Alfred James and Mary Jane. George worked as a laborer and wood carter, he then took over the running of Susannah's farm 'Seaton Ross' at Beverly, they employed 38 ticket of leave men, they then took up a holding at Wandering. 10/1/1894: George Holdway died at York, Western Australia.
