National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/2/2011829 May Prisoner name: Joseph Hollinshead. Prisoner age: 26. Court and date of trial: Chester Spring Quarter Sessions [Cheshire] 1829. Crime: Horse stealing - property of Joseph Steele. Initial sentence: [Death] commuted to 14 years' transportation. Gaoler's report: 'Character etc good - married 4 children; ordered to hulks.' Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): The convict and seven people of Macclesfield [Cheshire] including the prosecutor. Grounds for clemency: Respectable parents of good character; he realises the wickedness of his crime; leaves a wife and four children without support; feels repentance and will never do it again. Other papers: A letter from Jane Hollinshead, wife of James Street, Macclesfield, forwarding the petition. Additional Information: In Chester Castle Gaol. The convict is from Macclesfield.




Joseph Hollinshead was a married man with 2 or 4 children when transported. 1829: Assigned to J Blaxland on arrival. 1838: TOL 15/7/1843: COF 1846: Married Jane Powell (listed as Poel on the NSW BDM) – they had 11 children. Jane Powell was the daughter of William Powell and was born in 1820 in County Tyron. Jane arrived 1842 per Broome, she already had a brother here. Jane died 9/6/1887 at Ellalong, NSW. 1867: Joseph was a farmer at Cessnock, NSW. 9/10/1882: Joseph died at Wollombi NSW, aged 82 and was buried at Ellalong Anglican Cemetery.
