THOMAS HOLMES was indicted for stealing, on the 26th of June , a handkerchief, value 4 s. , the goods of Henry Warring . HENRY WARRING. I was in Holborn on the 26th of June, about eight o'clock in the evening; Hughes, the watchman, gave me some information - I put my hand to my pocket, and missed my handkerchief. HENRY HUGHES . I am a watchman. I saw the prisoner and another person following this gentleman and a lady; I saw the prisoner take the handkerchief from Mr. Warring's pocket; I took hold of him and his companion - they tripped me up, and threw me down, but I still kept hold of them. I got up, and secured the prisoner - the other got away. Prisoner's Defence. The handkerchief was thrown against me - I did not take it. GUILTY . Aged 28. Petitioner(s): Thomas and Mary Holmes of 39 Lestall Street, St Andrew's, Holborn [Middlesex], prisoner's parents, with Henry Waring prosecutor and three others. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Asks for sentence to be reduced; youth; industrious, respectable parents. ----------------------------------------------------- Please note that the details of the trial in the Old Bailey differ from those listed in the appeal. He was sentenced to 14 days, not 14 years. His age is given as 29, not 19. ---------------------------------------------------
