William Holness (1817-1892) was tried at the St Augustine Quarter Sessions on 5 Jan 1841 and convicted of stealing iron from a Mr. Coller of Wingham in Kent. He was sentenced to seven years transportation to Tasmania. According to his Gaol Report, he was a very bad boy. He had been convicted four times previously. He had received twelve months in prison for robbing a woman of £1.12s. 6d., fined 14s. 6d. for assaulting a police officer, 14 days in prison for stealing turnips and three months for stealing potatoes. He left England on the John Brewer on 17 November 1841 and arrived in Hobart on 6 April 1842. William remained in Tasmania, married and raised a family.
