Martin Honan was transported on the Waterloo, departing 21st May 1836 and arriving 6th Sep 1836 with 220 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

Convict Notes




The Convict Indentures state that Martin Honan was 30 years old. He could neither read or write; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Limerick. He was a farm labourer. Martin was convicted of stealing potatoes at Limerick City on 4 January 1836 and sentenced for 7 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attribution: Height 5 feet 8 inches; complexion dark sallow; hair dark brown mixed with grey and eyes grey. Transport number 140. Prisoner number 36-1943. 1837 NSW General Muster state that Martin Honan was assigned to Survey Department at Port Macquarie, NSW. In faint hand writing is the word invalid. Received ticket of leave on 13 November 1840 (40/2373) at Port Macquarie. A note on the ticket of leave states that this was altered to Maitland on 27 July 1842 (42/1011). Received Certificate of Freedom on 4 August 1845 (number 45/1011) in the district of New England. A comment stated that he nearly blind of right eye.
