National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/129/33 1833 May Prisoner name: Charles Hopkins. Prisoner age: 13. Prisoner occupation: Employed in parents' potato and coal business. Court and date of trial: Westminster Sessions [Middlesex] May 1833. Crime: Stealing money - 18d from William Hayman of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Annotated (Outcome): Convicted before; nil; [abroad]. Petitioner(s): Thomas Hopkins and Mary Hopkins, parents and 22 people. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Parents reduced to poverty through sickness and loss of business; large family; hunger; prisoner associated with bad lot of boys and led astray. Other papers: John Joseph supporting petition and offering to employ the prisoner in his business as a hatter. Additional information: Previously convicted of stealing a piece of meat and sentenced to three month's imprisonment.
