IN VDL: 26 May, 1853: On arrival in VDL, Pierre Francois HOURFAY alias ONFRY [sic], convict #27941, was listed as a labourer; 23 years old, 5’2½” tall with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. He was single, Protestant and literate. Native place: St Malo (in Brittany, n-west France). He said he had been transported for burglary and stealing clothes and money, and he had a prior conviction for stealing a loaf (2 days in jail). Ship’s surgeon’s report – “good” (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-115$init=CON33-1-115p96). 1 December, 1852: He was sent from Pentonville to be transported to VDL (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for Pierree Fras Hourfray; Pentonville Prison; Register of Prisoners; 1852-1854). -- The St Vincent’s surgeon superintendent, Thomas Somerville, recorded in the ship’s medical journal that 38 prisoners from Pentonville were embarked at Woolwich, on 1 December, “24 of whom were incorrigible and in irons” and on the same day “16 incorrigible prisoners were received in irons from Millbank.” (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C4106910) --00--

29 April, 1852: He was admitted again to Millbank [this date is based on the Pentonville record below that gives time spent in separate confinement at Millbank]. --0-- 3 August, 1852: From Millbank prison, he was readmitted to Pentonville and his name was changed by record keepers once again! Listed as PIERREE FRANCOIS HOURFRAY, inmate #4525. Aged 22, 5’2” tall, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, sallow complexion and a cast in both eyes; single, literate and Roman Catholic; no occupation. Relatives: Sister, Mary Hourfray, St Helens, Jersey. Character: behaviour in hulks “very bad”, in Millbank “good”. Places and periods of separate confinement: 3 months 5 days at Millbank. Conduct in Pentonville “good”. --0--

26 July, 1850: PIERRE F HOUFRAY [sic] was sent from Millbank and admitted to Pentonville prison, Caledonian Road, London; inmate #3175. At Pentonville, male convicts served their probationary term of 9 months, after which they would be transported or sent to a public works prison (https://www.prisonhistory.org/prison/pentonville-prison-2/). He was listed as single, 20 years old, born 1830; a cigar maker; convicted for burglary & theft; sentenced to 7 years. Next of kin: Mary Humphrey [Anglicised/misspelled Houfray], Providence Street, Jersey. Character received with prisoner “good”. Tried at St Heliers, Jersey; convicted for burglary and theft; sentence 7 years; one previous conviction, sentence 1 year. Conduct in Pentonville “good”. Time served in separate confinement: Jersey 3 months, Millbank 17 days (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for Pierre F Houfray; Pentonville Prison; Register of Prisoners 1849-1850). --0-- 10 March, 1851: He was sent from Pentonville to the Justitia prison hulk moored at Woolwich. --0--
