BERKSHIRE ASSIZES. George Giles was indicted for setting fire to a the possession Mrs. Hannah Howell, Arborfield, and Hannah Howell for procuring and counselling him the offence. It appeared that Mrs. Howell occupied a farm of considerable value at Arborfield having succeeded her husband therein, who died April, 1820. The month of September afterwards she emitted insurance with the Phoenix Fire Company for £2,000; and the night of the 26th February, this year, a fire broke out, which destroyed the barns, stables, out-houses, and stacks of corn. The property at the time the insurance was effected was proved to be worth the sum insured. No evidence was given to fix on her an intent to defraud the Office, or any adequate shown to account for her suborning Giles to commit act. the contrary she was bound by cover of her lease to rebuild the premises which would cost. For the prosecution it was sworn, that Mrs. Howell had first tried to induce one George White, a labourer on the farm, to set fire to the place, and had offered him £... .victuals the prisoner (Giles), who was another labourer, (and whom she had previously discharged from her service), on the day preceding the fire, while he lay concealed a barn the premises, and sent a message him White, the same time, to sure set fire the barn, else it would no account to her. This was sworn by George White, who was no means consisted the account gave, and who having been himself committed as accomplice, had been admitted King's evidence. The learned Judge treated the testimony of this man wholly undeserving of credit, excepting as far was confirmed other proof. It was sworn also that Mrs. Howell had gone after the fire to London, in search of Giles, and had given money keep out of way. Giles, it appeared from his own confession, that he had set fire to corn barn, and a rick. Mr. Taunton, for the prisoner Howell, took some objections in point of law, arising out of her possession of the premises, the absence of any intent on her part to injure or defraud. The case, however, after a most perspicuous, able, and humane summing from Mr. Baron Garrow, went to the Jury, who, after deliberating for 2 hours, brought in verdict of guilty, and both the prisoners immediately received sentence of death. The trial lasted eight hours. Cambridge Chronicle, 10 Aug 1821. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hannah Howell, aged 55, ….
