John HOWELL (John Algar HOWELL) was convicted at Kent on 2 Jan 1846 for stealing 10 gallons of oil. Prosecutor Mr. Algar. Previously convicted for stealing a coat. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Palmyra' arriving 23 Aug 1846. Aged abt 27yrs; a carpenter; married; 5'8"; Protestant; can read & write; fresh complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native Place: District of Norfolk, England. Wife: Caroline. No children recorded. Brothers: George, Charles, William, Henry. Sisters: Maryann & Lucy. VDL: 15 mths Probation period. Sent to Rocky Hills. 1849: Employed by George ALGAR at Campbell Town, VDL. (ref. 30/1/2) 7 May 1850: Ticket of Leave granted. Application for Permission to Marry: 25 May 1851 - John HOWELL (per 'Palmyra') to Catherine JEFFERY (per 'St Vincent'). Approved. (ref. 52/1/3 pg 220) Marriage: 26 May 1851 - John HOWELL, aged 24 yrs, carpenter to Catherine JEFFERY, aged 24 yrs, spinster at St. George's Church of England, Hobart. Clergy - H.P. Fry. Witnesses - James White & Susan White (they were married the same day and the Howell's were witnesses for them). Ref. 37/1/10 no. 223. (n.b. the age at marriage does not appear to be correct but may have been recorded incorrectly or an estimate)
