David Howie was listed as a "Tailor" upon arrival in Tasmania but after 1846 he began using the term Mariner and at death in 1859 he was referred to as Captain Howie.

David Howie married Mary Bogue in Launceston, Van Diemen's Land on 7th November 1850. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. James Garrett in accordance with the Rites and ceremonies of the Church of Scotland.The witnesses were Archibald Simpson and William Bull. Ref: AOT RGD37/7.
