National Records of Scotland Precognition against James Howie for the crime of theft, habit and repute at Graham Street, Edinburgh Dates 1831 Accused James Howie, Age: 15, shoemaker, Address: North Back of Canongate, Edinburgh, Origin: Born in Leith. Son of William Armstrong Howie and Janet Sutherland. 1832: NEW SOUTH WALES. RETURN OF ALL MALE CONVICTS, ASSIGNED AND TRANSFERRED BETWEEN THE 1st and 30th DAYS OF SEPTEMBER, 1832, INCLUSIVELY. Howie James, Clyde, comb-maker, to William Lithgow, Sydney 1843: TOL Illawarra 12/2/1846: COF 1855: Married Rachel Bichard (listed as Bishop on the VIC BDM), in Victoria. Son: William Howie born Dec. 1857 at Fryers Creek, Victoria. 1859: Moved to New Zealand. 1868: Was the Proprietor of the Royal Hotel in Greymouth, NZ. 1873: Purchased the Masonic Hotel, Greymouth. 14/11/1877: James died at the Masonic Hotel, 66 years old and was buried at the Greymouth Cemetery, NZ. 6/5/1927: Rachael died at Christchurch, NZ.
