Albion 1823 to VDL. Surgeon’s Journal. ADM 101/1/8B/1 1823 Folios 5-9: List of 200 convicts embarked on board the ship from HM hulks Leviathan and York, 8 May 1823, (names and details follow), also includes gaoler character references (not recorded below): Folio 5: George Hubbard, aged 28, convict, trade gardener; where born unknown, offence, stealing; date of conviction 11 April 1823, where convicted, Ipswich.




George Hubbard was convicted at Suffolk on 11/04/1823 for stealing a saddle, grand larceny. Guilty, 7 yr transportation sentence. George had previously been convicted in 1818 for stealing mutton and been given a transportation sentence. He served time on the Leviathan Hulk at Portsmouth until 1822 when he was released. Gaol Report: bad character Hulk Report: orderly Single man. Last employed at Mr. Thompson's, Mile End. 2 brothers in London. 1 brother & 1 sister at Ipswich. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Albion' arriving 21/10/1823. Clear conduct record in the Colony. Free Certificate 14/04/1830. Further Charge in Hobart: 08/01/1834 - Steal calf and ox from James Gordon Esq., Pittwater. Found Not Guilty.
