There is possibly a historic error in the recording of place of conviction for this lady, despite the fact that all muster rolls and indents list as having been convicted at Lancaster. I do not believe that she was convicted at Lancaster and give my reasons as: * Criminal Entry Book HO 13/5 p.147- National Archives (Ancestry- Criminal Entry Books-1787-HO 13/5-p.151) lists a Frances Ann Hughes as having recently been convicted at the Home circuit assizes for Surrey stealing from a shop at Kingston and receiving a 7 year sentence of transportation. It is unlikely (though not impossible) to have a second woman of the same name and sentence length at that time. *Also in the same document two pages back (p.145 within the book) the letter actually lists the seven convicts to be transported from the 26th March Lancaster Assizes, confirmed, including the locally well known children Elizabeth and George Youngson. There is no mention of Frances Ann Hughes amongst this group. * I have not found any further records in Australia for a Frances Ann Hughes of Kingston (upon Thames) though of course not everyone who received a sentence of transportation actually was. *A New South Wales, Australia, Settler and Convict Lists, 1787-1834-New South Wales-Convicts embarked-1787 (Ancestry) gives the date of Frances' conviction as 6th March 1787, not the 26th. The Surrey Lent Assizes began at Kingston Mon 2nd April (presumably concluding that same week). So was her actual conviction date the 6th April? Based on this- I believe that Frances Ann Hughes was actually convicted at Kingston upon Thames and some form of administrative error caused all subsequent documents mentioning her to be incorrect.

Frances Ann Hughes (c.1755-1839) was found guilty on 26 March 1787 at Lancaster of a felony. Sentenced to 7 years transportation, she arrived at Sydney aboard the Prince of Wales in January 1788 as part of the First Fleet. Frances was sent to Norfolk Island on the Sirius in March 1790. She married Thomas Hussey (Friendship 1788) in a mass wedding ceremony on the island in November 1791. The couple left the island, without children, for Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the Lady Nelson in November 1807. Following her husband's death by suicide in April 1808, Frances married George Patterson, a single man, on 7 May 1810 at Hobart. Frances Patterson was buried on 14 January 1839 at the Wesleyan cemetery at Back River, New Norfolk; her age was given as 95 but was probably nearer 80.
