James was transported for 'forging a bank note'. James was 23 years old, literate, 5’7” tall, single, brown hair, dark eyes, fresh complexion, middling stout. 25/7/1857: TOL 14/4/1850: CP 23/1/1864: Married Mary Tapping at Fremantle. They had 1 child, Bertha Louisa 1866-1883. James was self employed in Perth and then worked for William Brockman until 1860. Appointed to a teaching post at Quindalup, when he requested a salary increase, which was refused, he resigned and became a postmaster for the next 5 years. He was a bootmaker and agent at Quindalup and then spent 2 years working as a auctioneer and agent at Fremantle. 1875-1878 – was headmaster at Newcastle and then worked as an accountant in Perth. In 1885 he was a storekeeper in Perth. 9/1/1895: Went to Victoria but returned to live in Canning. 5/6/1898: Died at Canning, Western Australia. Mary Tapping Humphrey died in 1939.
