On Tuesday last, the undermentioned convicts passed through this town, with military escort, on their route from Carrickfergus to Cork, there to embark for New South Wales: Thomas Walker, John Whaley, John Whaley, jun. father and son, John Lane, Daniel McBride, John Hamill, John Corrigan, committed from the Police Office, Belfast; Alexander Hunter, Dennis Hunter, Bernard M'Laughlin, David McGowan, smugglers of tobacco; ??, James Henry, and Thomas Rice. The undermentioned persons were convicted at last Assize for the County of Antrim, and the several sentences affixed to names were passed upon them:— Alex. Hunter, Bernard McLoughlin, David M‘Gowan, Dennis Hunter, and Alexander M‘Millan, for conveying Smuggled tobacco, to be transported for seven years. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 28 April 1821.
