Census records 1841 suggest he was born 1828. Married Irish free woman Ellen Cronigan in Launceston and had a large family. Ellen died 14/07/1906 also at the family residence Elphin Rd. The family acquired several large properties over the years. One daughters married while two were spinsters. Three sons married (2 disowned by their mother afterwards) while one daughter-in-law was welcomed. Three sons met untimely deaths due to working with animals. They seem to have been the ideal people to forge the new country here as they all contributed to the workforce with successful businesses in dairy farming, black-smithing and training horses for racing or trotting.. Both William Sr and Ellen are buried at Carr Villa under a large Celtic cross with other family members.
