CRIME Elizabeth Ireland was transported for 7 years on convict ship "Wanstead" after being tried at Lancaster Quarter Sessions on 20 January 1813. She arrived in Sydney one year later on "Wanstead" on 9 January 1814. In the Census of October 1814 she was recrded as being assigned to Mr James Larra of Parramatta (he was a convict who'd been pardoned since 1794 and was by 1814 very commercially successful. However, his wife died in August 1814 and rumours about him began to circulate and his businesses suffered). BIRTH of CHILD At the same time that Elizabeth was assigned to Mr Larra, in 1814 so too was a convict named James Wells off 'General Hewitt" also arrived in early 1814. Wells was from Kent and was then about 28yrs old, and was doing 7 yrs for stealing pigs. Elizabeth Ireland and James Wells had a baby together. On the baptism of James Wells (baby) on 20 August 1815 at St Philip’s church in Sydney, they were recorded as the parents. The baby was recorded as being born on 6 August 1815. Since the child was not baptised at Parramatta Elizabeth would no longer have been working for Mr Larra. DEATH of ELIZABETH Sadly Elizabeth Ireland died four months after the birth of baby James, and her burial on 29 December 1815 was recorded at St Philip’s Church, Sydney. DEATH of THE BABY - 8 month old James Ireland died on 19 April 1816 and was buried the next day, recorded in the St Philip’s Church Burial register at Sydney (and NSWBDM 485/1816 V1816485 7. ) Who looked after him since his mother’s death (and father’s transportation to Newcastle in early 1816 ) is unknown.
