Carlow Assizes commenced on Thursday, ...  … John Irwin was sentenced to seven years transportation for a fraud of 10£ by representing himself as an artillery pensioner. Limerick Chronicle, 26 March 1828.

The Convict Indentures state that John Irwin states that he was 45 years old. He could read and write; religion: Protestant and status Married with 3 children. He was a native of Fermanagh and his occupation solider. He was convicted of obtaining money on false pretences (passing pensions) at Carlow on 22 March 1828 and sentenced to 7 years. He had 2 prior convictions. Physical attribution: Height 5 feet 93/4 inches; complexion ruddy and pock pitted; hair dark black to grey and eyes hazel. Transport number 142. Assigned to Mr A. P. Onslow, Manning River. Obtained Certificate of Freedom in 1838 (number 38/122).
