John Izzard was probably the child baptised on 3 July 1774 at St Mary's Church, Lambeth, Surrey. The register entry had the following notation: "John son of John Izzard & Mary". He was Tried at Surrey Assizes on 21 March 1798, where he received a sentence of 7 years transportation. He was sent to the "Fortunee" and "Hospital" hulks at Langston Harbour, age recorded as 24, offence grand larceny. John was transported on the ship "Perseus" which left England in January 1802 and arrived at Sydney NSW in August, 1802. In the 1806 muster he was listed as Free by Servitude, employed by John Howe. John Izard and Ann Scott married at St John's Church, Parramatta on September 11, 1808. The register entry noted that they were both living in the Hawkesbury district. John marked the register with a cross, and Ann signed the register. His occupation in the 1814 muster was recorded as a labourer at Windsor. In 1818 he was recommended to receive a grant of land of 50 acres. In the 1822 muster he was described as a landholder with 10 acres, all cultivated: 5 acres wheat, 3 acres maize, 2 acres barley, 50 bushels maize held, 9 horned cattle and 24 hogs. In the 1825 Muster he was listed as a labourer in Parramatta, and his wife and children were at Windsor, presumably on the farm, with the help of an assigned convict, John Howard ("Baring" 1819). In the 1828 Census he was listed as a labourer, and a land-holder at Windsor, with 12 acres, all cultivated, with one Horse, 20 cattle, and 17 sheep. John's age was 54, his wife Ann was 38, and their children were John 19, Edward 17, Mary 15, William 12, George 9, Francis 7. He was described as a puntman at the Windsor Punt at the time of his death in 1840. John Izzard died on 22 July 1840 at Windsor, New South Wales. An inquest on 23 July found that he accidentally drowned. The inquest was reported in the "Commercial Journal and Advertiser" on 29 July 1840: "An inquest was held on Wednesday last, at the Daniel O'Connell Public-house, Thompson's-square, Windsor, on the body of an old man, named John Izzard, who was found dead in a boat, with his head and part of body in the river. It appeared that the deceased, who is puntman at the Windsor Punt, on Tuesday evening last, put a man and his team across in the punt, and after doing so, went to the public-house, partook of a glass of rum, and then returned to his punt ; it is supposed, that after he had put put the punt in the stream, which is the usual thing at night, he got into his boat for the purpose of returning home across the river, and that while in the act of pushing his boat away from the punt, he must have over-balanced himself; his head and part of his body falling into the river, and not being perfectly sober at the time, he was unable to draw himself back into the boat. Verdict - Found drowned." He was buried in St Matthews Church Cemetery, Windsor. His gravestone has the inscription: SACRED to the Memory of John Izzard WHO DIED JULY 22 1840 AGED 70 YEARS Weep not for me my children dear I am not dead but sleeping here As I am now you all must be So fear the LORD and follow me
