Edward Contensen pleaded guilty to stealing in 1839 and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He spent exactly 4 years on the prison hulk, York (moored at Gosport), before given a free pardon. Within a year of his freedom, in 1844, he was again accused of stealing. This time, he tried using the alias of George Jackson, and denied any previous convictions. He was sentenced to 15 years transportation, and sent to Norfolk Island.
