Convict Notes
James Burke was transported with his brother Thomas (on board) for 'stealing notes'. 1826: Indent: Age 23. Married with a child. Native of Cork. Occupation ostler. Tried in Tralee and sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing notes. Assigned to the A.A. company on arrival.Brother of Thomas Burke who also arrived on the Mangles. 6/5/1831: Newcastle Goal: Labourer from Co. Cork. Admitted to Newcastle gaol from the Lambton cutter. To be kept in custody until a cutter could proceed to Sydney. Put on the Lambton 8 May 2/2/1832: Port Stephens: Prisoner under sentence of 7 years transportation. Subpoena'd for the trial of Michael Connolly at the Supreme Court Sydney. BURKE James Police Office, Stroud Port Stephens 25th May 1832 Before Captain R. G. Moffatt J.P; James Burke, Mangles 4th, 7 years, Assigned servant of the Australian Agricultural Company, stands charged by Mr Thomas Laman, with being illegally at large on the night of Saturday the 19th Inst. Mr Thomas Laman Overseer, Indentured Servant of the A A Company being duly sworn – stated that James was away from his Station which was three miles from Stroud. There were 2 robberies committed on the night in question and he believed the Prosioner was concerned in them. The prisoner states in his defence that he was drunk. The Court found the prisoner Guilty. Sentenced to receive Fifty lashes. 22/8/1832: COF No definite date of death found.
