LONGFORD SPRING ASSIZES James Costello, Peter Foley, jun , and Winefred Kelly, were indicted for robbing John Canning in the town of Longford, on the evening of the 1st of January. It appeared from the evidence of Canning, that he was in the market of Longford, selling a load of corn on the above day and on going home in the evening, he stopped bis cart Mrs. public house, went in, and put his money, £6 into his hat for further security; mounted his cart and proceeded as far the church gate, when he was followed by the prisoners, and others, who dragged off his cart, assaulted him, knocked off his hat when they lifted handkerchief which fell out of his hat containing the money, and ran away to the town. The above facts having been proved, and Canning having fully identified the prisoners as being of the party, they were found guilty, and each sentenced transported for 15 years. The three prisoners were some of the worst characters about Longford, and have no doubt but our townsmen will feel thankful for their removal. Costello, on receiving sentence, told his Lordship it was better than a bad marriage.. Roscommon & Leitrim Gazette, 7 March 1840. (Winefred Kelly was transported on the ship Margaret in 1840.)
