James GILHOOLY came to Tasmania, Australia on the ship 'Iron Tasmania' as a free settler, from Melbourne, Victoria on the 1854 voyage. (ref. "Arrivals" CB7/13/1/1) (Note also indexed under spelling "Gilloolay" James GILHOOLY was tried and convicted at Oatlands, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on 29 June 1855 for malicious wounding of Richard Dickenson. Death sentence, commuted to Life Transportation. 1855: aged 27 yrs; a tailor; single man; Roman Catholic; 5'5 1/2" height; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; blue eyes. Native place of birth: Newhaven, Connecticut, US of America. (ref: as stated at Court hearing) Mother: Catherine, at Newhaven, Connecticut, USA. Ten year Probation Period. For authority for commutation or sentence, see Colonial Secretary's files at Launceston. Now commuted to 8 yrs penal servitude. Probation Station: Port Arthur Penal Settlement, VDL. 25 Aug 1856, at Port Arthur - having a tommahawk weapon in his possession. 6 mths hard labour. 5 Sept 1856, at Port Arthur - resisting a Constable. 14 days in Solitary Confinement. 20 July 1861: issued a Freedom Certificate.
