Convict Notes
ADM 101/1/9. Medical Journal of the Albion, male convict ship from 9 May to 14 November, by Thomas Logan, surgeon and superintendent, Folios 2-3: 19 May 1828; twelve convicts were received from the hulk Ganymede, and sixty from the Justitia, they had all been examined previously to their coming on board the Albion. They all appeared to be healthy, were clean in their persons and dressed in a new suit of convict's clothes. Folio 3: 23 May 1828; fifty convicts were received from the hulk Retribution. Folio 3: 24 May 1828; received 60 convicts from the hulk Dolphin and 10 from the Euryalus. Our compliment of 192 is therefore now complete. Folio 4: case no 33 [34]; James Arrow, convict, taken ill at Sheerness; sick or hurt, small sore; Put on sick list 25 May 1828, date of discharge unknown. (Being a Londoner, James would probably dropped the H of his surname, when giving his name.)
Euryalus hulk record. HO-9-2-4 page 1 Received from Newgate, 23 July 1825. James Harrow, age 14, Stg a time piece, Tried Newington, 29 Aug 1825, 7 years, To NSW per Albion, 24 May 1828. The prison hulk, the Euryalus, an ex-frigate of the Trafalgar fleet, was moored at Chatham. Over the twenty years that this hulk serviced juveniles, about 2,500 boys of fourteen and under passed through. There were also considerable numbers of older boys both in the juvenile hulk and distributed among the other hulks. From the Euryalus, boys were transported both to New South Wales and to Van Diemen’s Land.
Surrey Sessions. Wm. Bridger and James Harrow, two boys, under twelve years of age, were sentenced to seven years' transportation for stealing a time-piece from the house of Mr. Reginald Graham, of Herne-hill. British Press, 30 Aug 1825.
