ADM 101/21/7A/61818-1819 Journal of the Convict Ship Earl St Vincent for 22 July 1818 to 15 January 1819 by John Johnson, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed on a voyage to New South Wales. Folio 13: 19 October 1818; convicts attended the usual duties. In serving out the oatmeal in line with myself present Denis Fitzgerald, James Hinckley and Mich [Michael] Poer refused taking it with a view to excite disturbance among the convicts put handcuffs on them, punished Thomas Ready, with 7 and James Lally with 12 lashes for insolence me.

James Lally's police career did not last long. The Monitor, Sydney, Tues 12 Jun 1827 reports: GOVERNMENT NOTICE. COLONIAL SECRETARY's OFFICE, MAY 31st, 1827. HIS EXCELLENCY the Governor has been pleased to approve of the following Alterations in the Police of the Colony, viz.- DISMISSED. James Lalley, per Earl St. Vincent, on the 10th ult. For Drunkenness.
