Convict Notes
James McGauley, enlisted Royal Artillery 22 April 1833 as a gunner & driver. He was assigned to the 6th Battalion until 31 May 1833. He was considered "under age" for pension purposes. On 1 June 1833 he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, RA (under age until 21 Apr 1834) and discharged 13 February 1840. During this time he was imprisoned 3 times. He was in Canada from 16 June 1838 to 13 February 1840 (imprisoned 6 July 1839-13 February 1840). His "character" was described as "very bad". His physical description was: 5' 8", "light" hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, no distinguishing scars or marks. He was 17 and a laborer. He was born "in the Parish of Navan, in or near, the Town of Navan in the County of Meath". He lived in Yass, NSW. It is possible that he married Margaret Paul in 1844.
