On Monday last sailed for Hobart Town, the ship, Admiral Cockburn, Captain Briggs. She conveys to that settlement 130 male prisoners, which were transhipped from the Bencoolen, under guard of a party of the 48th, commanded by Lieutenant O'Brien. James Riley was charged with stealing a cheque of Mr. Cartwright, upon the Van Diemen's Land Bank, for £31 10s. ; and, in a second count, with feloniously receiving the same, knowing it to have been stolen. Verdict - Guilty upon the second count. Sentence - to be transported for fourteen years. This man was tried on another count on Friday last with a man named Dogherty, and acquitted. It appeared from the evidence, that not the slightest imputation rested upon Dogherty. Colonial Times, 30 June 1835.
