Robert James, a man of colour, was indicted for burglary, in the dwelling-house of Richard Hines, of New Town. Guilty—transported for life. Colonial Times, 2 Feb 1841. --------------------------------------------------- POLICE COURT. Thursday, December 23rd, 1875. Before the Police Magistrate, and Mr. W. Knight. LARCENY Robert James was brought up on remand, charged by Detective Connor with stealing a door. The case had been remanded from the previous day for the production of further evidence. Constable Loring deposed that when he was on duty on Friday morning last his attention was attracted by Constable Peterson who had a door in his possession. Did not see anything of James, but he was afterwards brought to the watchhouse. Constable Burke deposed to having accompanied Constable Peterson to James's residence when he was arrested, For the defence Mr. Moriarty called Rose Ann Bates and Maria Brown, who deposed to having seen Constable Peterson and the prisoner struggling together on the morning in question. There was a bucket near and James appeared as if he had gone for water. The Bench considered the offence proved, and sentenced the prisoner to one month's imprisonment, giving him, the benefit of the good character he had borne for some time.
