Thomas (Small) was transported to VDL in 1824 ON PRINCESS CHARLOTTE.
Jane (Chapman) was born Kilmarnock Ayrshire about 1799. In 1826 at age27 as wife of Edmund (Chapple deceased) shoe binder, can cook, wash & get up linen, cannot write she was charged with larceny-stole money from a man-has been a prostitute;she stated 'I am a widow: my husband has been dead two years'; she was sentenced to Life at Middlesex Gaol Delivery. She arrived at Hobart Town on SIR CHARLES FORBES in 1827. She was 5'3 hair brown eyes dark grey. The ship's surgeon notes 'an active woman and has behaved well'. She became employed by Dr (Ross); blemished her reputation with a reprimand for drunkenness, neglect of duty & also sentenced to cell on bread & water 1 week & Factory 3 months for neglect of duty, absenting herself without leave and absenting herself all night. In 1829 she was again sentenced to Factory, Crime Class for repeated drunkenness & neglect of duty. In 1831 she applied to marry Thomas (Small free) & married him in 1832 at Hobart Town. In that year she was sent to Female Orphan School. A Thomas (Small) was born about 1804. He became a seaman, was convicted of stealing shoes from a shop in 1824 at Durham & Sadberge Assizes 7yrs; was recieved in prison hulk JUSTITIA at Woolwich age 18. He is possibly the man who married jane. She was recorded at muster in 1833. In this year she was reprimanded for being out after hours & also assigned to Orphan School. She received her Ticket of Leave in 1836. In 1837 she stole one brass candlestick, 1 knife, 1 fork property of Mr James (Mitchell) & was sentenced 6 months to hard labour in House of Correction. In 1838 she was charged with being in a public house after hours & discharged. Then in 1840 her Conditional Pardon was recommended-she had served above the ordinary time for a female convict and had latterly given proof of having become a reformed character, of which she produced testimonials.
